Mid-Century Modern Record Cabinet Makeover

 Twelve DIYs of Christmas
Day 3: Mid-Century Modern Record Cabinet Makeover

One of my best garage sale finds was this mid-century modern record cabinet, which I bought for $1.50. Let me repeat that last part: $1.50. Not $150, not $15, but $1.50. One dollar and fifty cents. A buck and a half. This is less than a large Dr Pepper at McDonalds when you're buying it full price without the app discount. It's a steal.

My favorite part of the cabinet is its origin. Based on the label on the back, you can tell that the cabinet was homemade. While I generally like to preserve wood, it unfortunately wasn't in good enough condition, so I used my favorite dark paint (Sherwin Williams Iron Ore) for the makeover. By applying two coats of paint, spray painting the metal portion of the legs, and adding new hardware, the whole cabinet gets a fresh facelift.

Here's the cabinet in its original state:

After patching some of the damaged wood, priming, and painting, here's the renovated version:

I love the classiness of MCM lines, the simplicity of the new metal hardware, and the added storage it provides in our office area. Not a bad use of $1.50, eh?

May your DIYs be merry and bright!
