Card Catalog Dupe from Wooden Drawers

Twelve DIYs of Christmas

Day 4: Card Catalog Dupe from Wooden Drawers

Picture this: It's bulk trash week and I'm driving home from campus. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a small wooden box on the side of the road. Its intended destination is the garbage truck. Slowing the car, I roll down my window to inspect. At first glance, the box is nothing special. But, lest you forget, I always take a second glance. This piece had potential. With a little love, I knew it could be something fun.

To address the obvious: the orange-toned finish and the bulky knobs weren't doing this little storage box any favors.

These are simple fixes, though. After removing the original hardware, I sanded the entire box and each individual drawer. Once it was sanded down to the raw wood, I sealed the wood with liming wax to add a layer of protection while not altering the natural color.

Then I added new hardware that made the whole piece appear more like a vintage card catalog. (Inexpensive hardware like this can be bought online or at craft stores, like Michaels.)

I love the combination of the natural wood finish and the brass undertones of the hardware.

Right now, I have the card catalog stationed on the MCM record cabinet, which I featured in yesterday's post. Not only is it a cute fixture on top of the cabinet, but it also creates a perfect little perch for our cat, Peanut.

Someone's trash is someone else's treasure! These wooden drawers were just waiting for their day to shine as a card catalog look-alike.

May your DIYs be merry and bright!
