Twelve DIYs of Christmas
Day 5: Roadside Trash to Lovely Wine Rack
Yesterday I admitted that I always brake for furniture on the side of the road. This causes my kids to groan, but at this point, it's part of my DNA. I came upon this wine rack, just like yesterday's wooden card catalog DIY, because it had been discarded as trash. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a "before" picture, so you'll have to let me describe its initial state.
Originally, the wine rack had a black finish, and the tray was painted in a red and gold Napa Valley wine motif, like the picture below.

This isn't the style or color palate I gravitate toward, so I painted the entire rack a mid-toned gray to make a neutral base. Then, to add dimension, I cut spare wood, which was taken from an unused old bed frame, to create planks that would give an appearance like shiplap or beadboard. I glued and nailed the planks for durability, filling in all nail holes before the final coats of paint.
Given that we're not wine drinkers, I posted this piece on Facebook Marketplace instead of keeping it, and it sold quickly. Not bad for a roadside trash flip! One tip for selling items online is to take good pictures so a buyer can envision the piece in use. I staged the rack with a borrowed bottle of wine, glasses, and greenery.
This project kept a perfectly functional item out of a landfill, gave someone else a fun entertaining station, and put some money in my pocket. Win win win!
May your DIYs be merry and bright!
