Going Beyond Ships in the Night. (Marraige is worth the investment.)

During the fall and spring semesters, my husband and I work opposite schedules.  I'm on campus in the mornings; he's on campus afternoons and evenings.  It's a very ships-in-the-night situation, minus the water, and the boats, and the night, for that matter.  (Who came up with that expression, anyway?)

At any rate, we haven't been able to spend much quality time together recently.  I miss that.  I miss him.

My feelings indicate that we've got to carve time out for each other.  Real time.  Not just time spent working side-by-side to care for the kids, and not just time informing each other of our upcoming schedules for the week so we're on the same page regarding where to meet on Tuesday at noon in order to swap vehicles so the right person has the van with the car seats.

Just typing that last sentence made me tired.

Perhaps you're in the same boat.  (That nautical metaphor just keeps delivering, doesn't it?)  If our marriages are going to thrive, we need time to connect with each other, time to enjoy conversation, and time to have fun together.  We don't just fall into this type of time; we need to create it.

Marriage is worth the investment.  Right beside him is where I belong, after all, not just in passing like ships in the night.

We need more alone time, too, but we're not at a loss in terms of family time. Sounds hectic, Girl. Hang in there.

  2. Yesterday at church my pastor spoke about resting... and finding time for what matters:

    1- God
    2- Your marriage
    3- Time with your children

It's such a balancing act... especially when juggling the schedules of 4+ people!

I hope you can plan the time that you need with one another.

    Wishing you a lovely week.
    xoxo

  3. Sometimes we need to get back to the basics of what's most essential in life, don't we? The simplicity of that list resonates with me.

  4. Aww, Brandee, thank you so much! I'm hanging in there the best that I can, and I hope that you and Jim can have some time for just the two of you soon.

  5. Oh yes, the car/car seat swap. My husband and I did that for about 2 weeks before we broke down and bought a second car seat.
