When I feed Kerrington her nighttime bottle, I always hold it for her. She's perfectly capable of wrapping those little hands of hers around it now that she's a mature eight-month-old, but then I'd miss watching her arms.
When she's drinking a bottle, Kerrington's arms have a life of their own. They lift to the sky haphazardly like she's in a zero-gravitational zone. Her fingers clench into fists and then unfold to reveal open palms. Like undulating grass in the wind, her arms move as if they are swayed by some erratic breeze.
This evening by the time she had drained the last ounce, she had tucked each of her hands behind her head as she leaned back into me, as if she were a little baby relaxing on the beach, or an unaffected daydreamer lying on her back in the grass under the open sky trying to make out shapes in the clouds.
She'll learn to hold that bottle eventually. For now, though, I'll keep that as my job.

I understand completely.
ReplyDeleteSoon enough she'll be saying "I do it!!"
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't miss that for the world
You've made my heart hurt reading this. I miss my baby, even though I love the age that Dudette is now. I now see why women are willing to go through the agony of labor. It's for moments like that.
ReplyDeleteOh man, brings back memories of my little one, but I breastfed, He'd do the same thing with his arms, but much of the time he'd reach up and touch my face or reach out like he was trying to touch the stars, eventually he would be down, he'd turn his head, have a little content smile on his face and snuggle back into me. I think its sucha gratifying feeling watching your little one eat or fall asleep content and safe in your arms. :)

(let's try this again! blogger ate my other comment)
ReplyDeletethis is the sweetest post! I miss my girls being little. My oldest just turned 12 Friday.
I was visiting Top Mommy Blogger and your title caught my eye. My husband is always teasing us about our "pink" dryer lint and our several loads of pink laundry each week. He is outnumbered 4 to 1 too :D
Following you now, can't wait to come by for another visit.
I don't blame you! Share that baby with me, I miss that the most about having small children. I wonder if my seven year old would take offence to being bottle fed?
ReplyDeleteIt's such a universal motherhood experience.... thank you all for your comments. Yes, I'm holding her tightly, knowing that this won't be forever. Oh, it's so sweet right now, though.
