It's Always During the Night

I'm not sure how or why it happens, but based on my nearly nine years of parenting, I've observed that my children always come down with the stomach bug during the night.  Apparently, we're not raising daytime vomiters.

Perhaps it's best this way, considering that I react to vomiting with inappropriate nervous laughter and an immediate desire to spray my child with Lysol rather than to hold her hair away from her face as she heaves into the toilet.  The cloak of night seems to cover my squeamishness, allowing me to move on autopilot in a haze of semi-delirious grogginess, scrubbing carpets and changing sheets and starting laundry without (much) flinching.

When the stomach bug strikes in the night, the crisis is over by the break of dawn, as if the episode was a bad dream, nothing more, which certainly works for me.

What about you? What's your parenting Kryptonite, the one thing you can't deal with gracefully?

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who nervous laughs at vomit! It seems so wrong! I have similar reactions to blood and injuries

  2. So I'm guessing that you never considered the medical field then, either, eh?

  3. I can deal with vomit, but I cannot deal with lack of sleep. Looking back, I cannot even fathom how I survived when my girls were babies. Now, I gotta have my 7-8 hours or I'm good for nothing! :-)

  4. Yeah, how DID we ever do that? Impossible!

  5. I was about to say the exact same thing. I need sleep... without it, I'm a monster. I tried co-sleeping with both my girls to "bond" and "be closer" to them but the fact that their every move affected my sleep, I shipped them to their own rooms at about 6 weeks of age. I realized I was a better mom when I was well rested.

Wishing the kiddos a speedy recovery.

  7. My oldest just spent half of the night puking. This has only happened with our kids once before (I know... we're blessed). However, I had to return here to comment (as thoughts of this posting were swirling through my head last night)... maybe vomit is my parenting Kryptonite (a term my husband now loves by the way). The combination of exhaustion and mopping up puke whilst dry heaving was most unpleasant.

Oh... the hubs and I both had bouts of nervous laughter too. So I guess you're not alone in that department.

  8. Oh no! Oh no, oh no, oh no! Sorry to hear that puking has descended over your household. I hope that your daughter is feeling better and the rest of you are all holding firm!
I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only one who laughs inappropriately!
