Time You Enjoy Wasting Is Not Wasted Time

Yesterday I was extremely productive.  This seems like a good thing, except that all my productivity was directed toward tasks that weren't necessary to complete at the moment.  I organized paperwork, redesigned handouts for a class, backed up documents, and archived pictures I've taken over the last few months.

Nothing urgent.  No looming due dates.  Just stuff that needed to be done sometime, and that "sometime" happened to be yesterday.

As I worked, though, a concern cropped up that I was wasting my time.  After all, I had other tasks to complete, ones that arguably were more important or pressing.

I'm so focused on time!

I try to cram as much productivity into all waking hours, feeling as if I'm squandering a precious commodity with any action or task that falls outside of the realm of being purposeful.  But sometimes I can't live according to the clock.  I've got to live in the moments, too.

The truth is, I enjoyed the odds-and-ends I completed yesterday.  None of them advanced today's to-do list, but each brought its own pleasure.

Sometimes, that's enough.

I love my days of just doing "nothing". I wish everyone could experience one of those :) Great post

  3. Sometimes its more than enough, in fact, its essential that we don't always live in the 'doing' mode. I'm learning more and more to not be a slave to tasks and 'doing', but to be by enjoying deeply a 15 min cup of coffee, drinking in the beauty around me and not just the coffee, indulging in reading a novel BEFORE bedtime (whoa, steady on!) because its essential for our soul and for the being/heart/soul in us that is actually essential for our spiritual walk. Stop me, i'm starting to write a blog post! As you can tell, i've started the journey of Mindfulness. Will write a post about it once I've lived it a bit more. But in short, don't apologise for these days. Embrace them.

  4. I love your miniature blog post here! I love that you're learning to replace the "doing" with the "being." (Novels before bedtime -- how wonderful!) Thank you for sharing!
