Long Showers

I take showers that are too long.  There, I've said it.  (Actually I've written it, but you intuitively understood this, right?)

I have few vices besides from chocolate and no habitual luxury expenses -- no smoking, no drinking, no coffee, very little caffeine, no frequent trips to the salon, no manicures or pedicures, no massages (although, I'll admit, getting a massage right now sounds fabulous).

But I do indulge in one thing: I take long showers.

I'm not talking obscenely long -- just long enough that something in addition to dirt washes down the drain.  Stress spirals in that little whirlpool at my feet and slips away, too.  It's a form of therapy, a kind gesture to myself, a way to be in touch with my senses and revel in pelting, liquid relaxation.

My showers also are too hot.  I like stepping out of the shower almost flushed, even though this can't be good for my skin.  In general, I'm a heat-lover.  I'll station myself in front of space heaters and blast a heating vent in my direction as I drive, blinking away the dryness from my contacts but relishing in the warmth.  It's just so good.

What do you love?  How do you treat yourself nicely?

Amen sister, amen. I could have written this post, though not as well. At all. Plus, I drink coffee and Diet Coke. Ok, so I couldn't have written it. But I do take hot, long showers.

I also have a fireplace in my office. I stand in front of it so close that just about starts barbecuing me. Yeah, I know what you mean.

I LOVE shower time. LIke you, I'm probably destroying the planet and running up our water and gas bills to astronomical levels. But it's the one time of day I get to hide for a moment and shut out the mommy chaos. I also have a guilty addiction to coffee (I wrote about a tragic day I had without it on my blog) http://www.holdingthedistaff.blogspot.com/2012/02/my-love-affair-with-coffee.html

  3. If I need a little stress reliever I go to bed early with a good book and popcorn, leaving my husband to do bedtime.  But if I REALLY need a pick me up I go and actually buy the book instead of just visit the library.

So true! The time to rinse and think about your day or whats to come!

  5. Long showers all the way. I grew up on average and we would soap up dry and just rinse off in the shower. So unsatisfying. Once I moved out of home I fell in love with hot steamy showers and try as I may I can't give them up.

  7. Long showers in death defying heat, dark chocolate anytime of the day and a massage once a year. :-)

  9. I do love those long showers.  Getting lost in a book also does it for me!  Love your blog!

  10. I like long hot showers too! Like someone said below, just a little peace from the mommy chaos, except when they come in fighting! LOL! Plus the hotter the better! We're not polluting, we're saving ourselves from worse destruction!!!

  11. You just rocked my world my referring to coffee as a luxury expense. I suppose that's really what it is but up until this point I've considered it medicinal and therefore necessary...

  12. Ah, Hilary, I think you're right.  As a non-coffee drinker I don't get it, but for those of you who love it, truly, it's not a luxury; it's a necessity!  ;)
